Hero of the day: Brian Glover

Name
Brian Glover.

Job Deceased actor, wrestler and teacher.

Special powers To provide the world with gritty realism and tea.

He said ‘You play to your strengths in this game. My strength is as a bald-headed, rough-looking Yorkshireman.’

They said ‘He wants milkin’ him… the big fat git’

Finest hour
His role as Mr Sugden in Kes. Never before or since has an actor managed to so accurately portray someone from a PE department. His wry put-downs and comic overbearing of the kids is so close to home that you can be forgiven for thinking that you’re watching a documentary as opposed to a feature film.

Did you know? Apart from his stellar performance in Kes, Glover also co-starred in Alien 3 and An American Werewolf in London. Born in Barnsley, Glover also used to be a professional wrestler,
going by the name of ‘Leon Arras, the Man From Paris‘. He also provided
one of the voices for the animated Tetley Tea TV adverts.Tetley

Why we love him Basically, his role in Kes. The way in which he delivers every single sarcastic line is incredible! Far from being some whimsical thesp, Glover was the real deal and drew on his experiences from life. A good honest actor, ever dependable and a favourite of the nation. You can’t say ‘Thaaat’s better, that’s Tetley…’ without doing a Brian Glover impression.

He was also in Bottom, with Rik Mayall, who was also one of the blokes in the Yorkshire pub in American Werewolf in London!

Brian starred in a brilliant version of the Canterbury Tales in a theatre in London and before the performance started he came out into the auitorium and shook hands with everyone in the audience. I was proud to say I met him.

He was also in the Likely Lads and Porridge.

A clever man, too: graduate of Sheffield University I think.

Don’t forget he was the one to hate as a wrestler: very cocky and always a winner.
