Sony PlayStation 3: ‘How to kill your brand’ song

By ShinyMedia on February 28th, 2007

This musical attack on Sony’s PS3 is much more entertaining than a PowerPoint presentation. And I have to say I agree with a lot of what is being said. The Wii is fun and innovative, Xbox 360 has Live! and a growing library of great games, while the PS3 has a lot of catching up to do. The console itself has huge potential, but right now Sony has given me no incentive whatsoever (high price, lack of backwards compatibility with PS2 games, shit selection of launch titles) to consider buying it next month.

The Tie Project

By Isabelle on February 28th, 2007

Day_67
My initial reaction on seeing Francis Heaney’s tie project was ‘yuck’ But the more I looked the more I liked. How many men do you know who skirt the edges of fashion in the pursuit of sartorial excellence? My guess would be not many. I salute Mr. Heaney for his surprising but well thought out tie and shirt combos; I don’t think we’d see him ever wearing ‘comedy’ ties and hope it inspires you all to dress a little more adventurously.

American Apparel Loop Terry Resort Robe

By ShinyMedia on February 28th, 2007

9479_03
You be looking like a motherf**king gangster in this cheeky, terry-towelling dressing gown. Wearing it will make you feel like Ray Liotta in Goodfellas; bourbon shots and cocaine paranoia are optional accessories. Just don’t wear it with sensible slippers, or you’ll ruin the look. Flip-flops, maybe.

Available in a wide range of colours from American Apparel’s online store, for £24. Be aware, if you’re a fat, life-lovin’ gangster, it’s probably not for you – it comes in one size only: medium. BUY IT

Spiewak military jacket

By mofgimmers on February 27th, 2007

Spiewak_jacket

Listen up gentlemen. You may not realise it, but the weather is getting a little warmer out there, and you’re going to have to start thinking about what you’re going to wear.

Instead of sweating it out in your duffel, try this smart military-style Spiewak jacket. Cut in a great green with a tab collar and 4 button pockets at the front. Finished with epaulets and a button placket.

It’s a cotton/nylon mix to keep the heat in, but it will let you cool down in the warmer weather too. However, it’s not cheap at $110, but what price can you put on looking fly?

Carine Roitfeld to head Vogue Homme International

By Isabelle on February 27th, 2007

Carineface
Fashion fanatics, do not fear – your fashion saviour is here. As well as editing Vogue France Carine Roitfeld is now head of the biannual men’s magazine ‘Vogue Homme International’. She told the Observer on Sunday: "I think it’s difficult to do fashion for men,
because either you become very over-homosexual fashion or very boring
fashion. You don’t want a boy who looks 15 in a little pair of shorts
with some strange art … But to see just a jacket and tie is boring." Men’s fashion is being taken more seriously, which is a good thing for menfolk tired of seeing the same old thing on the high street, (Burton distressed denim and faux-vintage tees anyone?) and with Carine Roitfeld on your side things are looking up!

Clarks Re Heat shoes

By mofgimmers on February 27th, 2007

Clarks

For ages, Clarks have made brilliant shoes. From formal footwear to great loungers like this pair of Re Heat shoes. The Re Heat shoes from Clarks Originals are a lightweight casual lace up with a stylish suede upper with an "asymmetric shaped vamp and perforation detail" as well as a crepe rubber sole unit.

I’ve no idea what that means, but they’ll look cool on your feet and that’s the main point of buying shoes. Going for a reasonable £69.99 and available nationwide.

New Paul Smith range

By mofgimmers on February 27th, 2007

PaulsmithlondonSo, what’s new for 2007? Well, according to Paul Smith, it’s classic two button suits all the way.

Pick of the new range is this ace sand coloured two button cotton drill jacket. Now, the folks at Paul Smith have coupled it up with a taupe shirt and navy seersucker trousers for a cool, almost English take on the preppy look.

Smith’s new range also comes in light pastel shades including pale pink and blue for the more adventurous amongst you. The pastels follow through into knitwear "which are a perfect match with the subtle summer shirting colours".

More at the Paul Smith website.

Johnny Greenwood is the Controller, a selection of reggae compiled by Johnny Greenwood

By ShinyMedia on February 27th, 2007

B000m345d801_aa240_sclzzzzzzz_
Johnny Greenwood, as you may or may not know, is Radiohead’s lead guitarist. When he’s not composing mind-bending guitar solos for one of the world’s greatest rock bands, he likes to kick back, twist up a fat one (maybe) and listen to reggae. Johnny spent months digging through the back catalogue of Trojan Records to come up with this splendid compilation, featuring rare cuts from the likes of Lee Perry, Desmond Dekker, Gregory Isaacs and Linval Thompson. Highly recommended. BUY IT

Let’s Rock candle

By ShinyMedia on February 27th, 2007

Picture_2_113
This Let’s Rock candle is truly the Ozzy Osbourne of candles. Or the Motorhead of candles. Or the Iron Maiden of candles. Or the Whitesnake of candles. Or… well, you get the picture – it’s a candle for rock gods, and also you. It comes in a range of bright colours, including black, black and, er, black. Henry Ford would approve; Ozzy, Lemmy and co would obviously accept nothing less.

And yes, there is something a little disturbing about a candle in the shape of a ‘double viking’ fist – which finger will burn down quickest, do you think? Available from Urban Outfitters, for the reduced price of £15 (was £18). BUY IT

R2-D2 Pedal Bin

By mofgimmers on February 26th, 2007

R2d2_pedalbinStar Wars, as we all know, is the king of merchandising. Quite a lot of it is complete tat aimed at 10 year olds… but occassionally, you get a diamond amongst the rough.

This particular gem comes in the form of a pedal bin shaped like R2-D2. The Artoo bin is made by Japanese company Heart, but is being imported to various countries at the moment – including the UK. It stands 24 inches tall, has a foot lever that flips open R2′s head for your waste and a removable interior for ease of emptying. You can order one now, but it’s not cheap. Currently going for £99.

‘The Steep Approach to Garbadale’ by Iain Banks

By ShinyMedia on February 26th, 2007

Picture_1_283
Iain Banks, author of The Wasp Factory, The Crow Road and Complicity, to name just three of his novels, is one of my favourite British authors. His prose is imaginative and shot through with black humour. So I’m always excited when he has a new book out. The Steep Approach to Garbadale has been favourably reviewed, with many critics acclaiming it as his best book in years.

The novel traces the recent history of the Wopuld family, which built its fortune on a board game called Empire. I’ve only just received my hardback copy via Amazon, so haven’t had a chance to finish it yet. So far though, it’s shaping up to be yet another cracking read from the pen of Banks. BUY IT

Howies ‘Adrenaline is cheaper then cocaine’ t-shirt

By ShinyMedia on February 26th, 2007

Me_adrenaline_heather
Made from soft, 100% organic cotton, this t-shirt is part of Howies‘ shiny new range for this spring/summer. I have to agree with its slogan, too – cocaine is an overpriced drug for wankers; and if you’re not a wanker, it’ll turn you into a wanker before you can say ‘Where did that 50-pound note go?’ Adrenaline, on the other hand, is not only cheaper – it’s absolutely free.

Available in heather grey, from the company’s own website, for £25. BUY IT
