Dries Van Noten is a fraud. He pretends to be all shy and retiring with his folk influences, natural fabrics, ethnic inspired prints, but then every collection he’ll do something so flashy and metropolitan it would make Puff Daddy look like Tarzan.
These gold brogues for example. They’ve still got the Dries interest in tradition (he did a whole collection once based on the classic Scottish brogue) but they’re considerably sexed up. On the catwalk they were paired with simple black trousers either cropped to show an expanse of ankle or full length and baggy.
You may not agree, but even when he’s being this ostentatious, I still think M. Van Noten manages to be thoughtful, intelligent and tasteful.
