Qasimi are newcomers to the catwalk this season. Their collection for men and women launched at this year’s fashion week. They brought their post-punk attitude to formal wear and ram-raided the boundaries of masculinity with edgy tailoring mixed with clever draping.
Qasimi are two designers: H.H. Khalid bin Sultan AlQasimi and Elliott J. Frieze who met at university in London. Khalid studied architecture, and this background can be seen in the smart cutting and clean lines of the collection, but also in the love of draping – folds and pleats if used cleverly, are another way of structuring a garment.
With this collection they’re slightly moving into Unconditional’s territory, but they bring a more futuristic slant to it, and a stronger emphasis on formal wear. It was a very coherent collection and was a strong statement of the new designers’ aesthetic.
