CBGB, the legendary birthplace of the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie etc., made international news when it closed two years ago. But, to the inevitable sound of purists lamenting, the Manhattan site has re-opened… with John Varvatos’ name over the front door.
Varvatos bought the club to save it from becoming “a deli, or a Bank of America”, and, making sure to retain its historical significance, not too much inside has changed. Graffiti and 40 year old flyers cover the walls – but we’re not sure what’s happened to the infamous toliet-without-a-door.
As well as his own collection, Varvatos will be selling vintage vinyl and audio hardware and is creating a limited-edition diffusion line ‘315 Bowery’ specially for the store.
