New male fragrances that aren’t endorsed by David Beckham are pretty rare these days, so it’s refreshing to see a magazine like Monocle decide to make one. Given the care they’ve taken in designing their magazine and website, it’s an almost certainly that that Hinoki will be given the same amount of care and attention.
Teaming with Comme des Garçons’ perfumer, Antoine Maisondieu, they’ve created a fragrance that’s said to be inspired by ‘Japanese hot-spring baths and Scandinavian forests’. Whilst I can’t vouch that it smells like either of those influences, I can say that it’s a very woody, spicy scent. It’s designed for a target Monocle reader and has a maturity that could smell out of place on someone in their early twenties.
If you change your fragrance according to the occasion – and you should – then this is best suited to the office, although it could be worn at smart gatherings. Seeing as summer’s here, it should be noted that it may be too strong for hot weather (as heat amplifies the smell, hence the need for summer fragrances).
If you’ve been looking for a fragrance that suits an office atmosphere and has an edge of maturity to it, then Hinoki is one of the best one the market.
