Mighty Boosh at O2 Arena: Noel Fielding wows with his stage outfits

The Mighty Boosh have lost a little of their quirky homespun charm now that they’re living up to their Rock n’ Roll onstage personas, but they can still pack a venue with adoring fans.

Their gig at the O2 arena in London yesterday was a sellout, Noel Fielding had as many costume changes as Katy Perry at the MTV EMAs, including the ones pictured above but the highlight was probably a bizarre old lady outfit teamed with gold boots! I doubt that any of Fielding’s costumes would translate to real life, but as the comedian once said himself “you can never be unhappy in a poncho”, so maybe give it a go during the low points of the Christmas break?

Acne Jeans-Lanvin Collection Launches: a glimpse of Spring 2009

By Colin Chapman on December 19th, 2008

lanvin_acne_jeans.jpg

Acne Jeans have just launched a collaborative denim collection with Lanvin. Check out their lovely Flash pop-up lookbook to see an (oh so welcome!) glimpse of Spring 2009. Soft denim blazers, pleated shorts, these shapes will inevitably be replicated by the high street come summer. Lanvin, under the eye of designer Alber Elbaz, has become one of the most directional brands in menswear in recent years. Not to mention Elbaz’s kitting out Tilda Swinton for red-carpet affairs.

Always cutting edge in terms of shape and finish, the Lanvin label has a genuine polish that (almost) justifies the eye watering prices. Acne Jeans meanwhile are a personal fave: their jeans are impeccably made, and you can guarantee that the very latest cut will be on offer, if at a cost. Their pleated Gentleman’s Jeans earlier this year (also a collaboration: with Fantastic Man magazine) had Charlie Porter in a dither and calling for the end of the skinny jean.

Escape the holiday hell and take a peak at what we’ll be wearing next Spring.

Gabe and Max are my grooming heroes

By admin on December 19th, 2008

I would want nothing more for Christmas than to be gently woken up by these two guys handing me a steaming mug of tea as they pick out my outfit. I could happily trot off to the shower knowing they were planning my clothes, hairstyle and make up for the day. Check out this video where they showcase their styling genius, mm hairgel.

Kerchiefs: another alternative to bow ties

By Colin Chapman on December 19th, 2008

kerchief.jpg

The other day I posted an alternative to the bow tie .. and here’s another. The kerchief worn as necktie adds a jaunty, hipster edge to your shirt collar. There are several ways to knot, consider your personal style and what you’re wearing it with. Ideally find something vintage. Silk always looks dashing or use that spotted pocket square you’ve never had a use for.

A recent Facehunter post shows this accessory idea off to stunning effect though it’s something that The Sartorialist has also featured before, and can even be spotted in current Uniqlo window styling.

So take a break from Christmas shopping and dig out that gem. But be advised to go for subtlety in colour and proportion: unless you really ARE channeling Quentin Crisp.

Present Tense: last minute Christmas gifts

By admin on December 18th, 2008

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

Kickers team up with Chromeo and Lovebite for some Fancy Footwork

By admin on December 18th, 2008

kickers fancy footwork chromeo css lovebite video buzzcocks buzzkicks jarvis cocker casual cockers.jpgBuzzcocks ‘Buzzkicks’: £80, Kick Hi Lumberjack: £70.

Brand hyping is usually dull PR fluff but at a Kickers presentation yesterday I learnt some Very Interesting Things I Didn’t Know Before. Here they are:

  • It was started in France in ’68 (which has special significance) by Daniel Raufast who wanted something for hippies to wear on their feet.
  • Famous Kickers wearers include David Bowie, Buzzcocks and Ian Brown. The shoes enjoyed a renaissance in the late ’80s on the casuals scene -which I’d put money on making a return very soon btw.
  • Jarvis Cocker wore Kickers so much the company made him a special pair which were dubbed ‘Cockers’.

The company installed a shed around UK festivals where you show off your moves and ended up in an amazing stop-frame vid made by Lovebite, aka Nottingham duo Nick Cobby and Allan Buxton, soundtracked by a nice little CSS remix of Chromeo‘s Fancy Footwork. Phew! If you’re not intrigued after that little intro then you’re dead, the video after the jump.

Love the Look: Belted blue shawl cardigan

Shawl collars have been this winter’s trend detail in menswear and they’ve been a great way of updating the now slightly pedestrian cardie.
This guy has chosen a wonderfully luminous shade of blue and teamed it with a winter-sky grey jacket which makes it glow even more. What looks like a felt baseball cap adds a modern yet minimalist touch to the look, bravo!

Burts Bees: the perfect stocking filler?

By Colin Chapman on December 18th, 2008

Burts.jpg

I mentioned Burts Bees in my winter sun post the other day. They’re a great man brand, and a perfect stocking filler idea. Clean fruity smells that are never too girly and that no-nonsense packaging with the Walt Whitman-esque bearded guy logo. Buy here from John Lewis or Wholefoods or, if you’ve got friends or relatives coming over from the States or Canada, beg space in their luggage. The also have an online store here.

Top tips UK-side: the orange facial cleanser is perfect for winter mornings as a wake me up. A bit like smearing your face with a zingy marmalade. Leaves a light residue on your skin after wiping the excess away that helps to protect from the elements without being greasy. It even tastes great!

I’ve already praised their never-ending lip balm but also worth mentioning is the super-hardworking hand salve. Go get.

Brandish Christmas Picks: Franklin Prince silver bracelets

By admin on December 17th, 2008

Christmas is fast approaching and if you’re still stuck for ideas then Franklin Prince’s bracelets (£10) make the perfect stocking filler or thoughtful Secret Santa. Hippy chic is not something you often see on Brandish and to be quite honest I’m glad, but these bracelets are like a smarter, more grown-up version of the tat you wear around your wrist as a teen; men’s jewellery doesn’t get much better than this.

Lapo Elkann, Fiat heir and Gianni Agnelli’s grandson wears similar style bracelets with a suit to personalise a formal look and it’s a damn sight more stylish than donning a pair of novelty socks which lets face it, no one wants for Christmas!

George W Bush’s response to the shoe thrower now available on a t-shirt

By Jonathan Smith on December 17th, 2008

plus41-cellophane-size-ten-shoe-tshirt.jpg

Now we know that Bush is out of office in just over a month and that the good ship McCaine has been sunk we can now look back with nostalgia at good old George W. and in the twilight months of his presidency he gives us the wittiest and quickest remark he has ever mustered: “If you want to know the facts, it’s a size 10 shoe.” – standing ovation please.

With cat like reactions Bush dodged the flying size 10 and with perhaps even quicker reactions PLus 41 and Cellophane have released the t-shirt pictured above, I love it. This is one of those seminal quotes that our generation will always remember and reference and our kids will never understand or care.

Available from PLus41 and Cellophane

Will’s Christmas Outfit Picks: Topman ‘Exclamation Mark Print’ Polo

By Will Reid on December 17th, 2008

outfit.jpg

Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?

Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)

I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

To buy the polo click here and to see the outfit details see after the jump!

Workwear boots: it’s Hard Times again ..

By Colin Chapman on December 17th, 2008

workboots.jpg

Classic workwear boots are one of those trends that have been bubbling under for quite a while now with the potential to become a roaring must-have.

Recent Sartorialist posts only confirm this. The redheaded hipster on the right wears them with a certain knowing pride (and a perfect jeans tuck!) whilst the patched and beautifully battered pair (top left) that had Sart swooning last week will no doubt boost sales immeasurably. Redwings are the most classic option. So stylish and proper they’ve never actually gone away, just waited quietly to be taken note of again. Jump through to find out where you can get workwear boots in the UK.
