uniqlo opening ceremony humberto leon carol lim.jpgUniqlo are announcing their collaborations for spring and Opening Ceremony have been confirmed for a menswear collection. Also taking part in the Designers Invitation Project this season are Gilded Age who's classic take on Americana will sit well with the Uniqlo aesthetic.

One half of Opening Ceremony, Humberto Leon said: "when you order this much, the cost significantly decreases. We had to ask ourselves, 'How many zippers can we really have in a garment?' The craftsmanship is there. They executed all our details on an amazing level." Their collaboration with Chloe Sevigny was really well received so it's with great anticipation that we await for their line, which debuts in March.

Part one of our Paris Menswear show round up, and both Hermés and Raf Simons wowed but for different reasons, check after the jump to see a short clip of the Raf Simons vid complete with rotating mirrors and you'll see why the fash pack went mad for this one. Also after the jump is the Dries Van Noten show, a timelessy retro affair with '40s influenced tailoring which managed to look fresh rather than museum-y. the green baize-y background added to the Hitchcock glacial feel.

Been-there with beanie? Rethink in cashmere

OK, so the slouchy beanie hat is hardly news, having been here since the days of Nirvana and worn by every self-respecting celeb as they venture out to get the milk after another all-nighter in Primrose Hill. But the beanie hat in a luxury textile casts the rock drummer's hat of choice in an entirely new light.

Cute plasticine TV character Morph is to appear in a shoot for Esquire magazine. The shoot is to commemorate Morph's 30th anniversary and the news comes the day after Tony Hart's funeral. Narrated by Hart the pair appeared together for over twenty years on Tony Hart's various art programmes.

Flavor Flav strikes a kooky pose to promote his latest show 'Nite Tales', which is billed as a horror extravaganza it's a far cry from his days as Public Enemy's flamboyant rapper.

I like his grills (nothing better for surprising noisy kids on the bus!) and he is still rocking the clock. I'm a little dismayed that this look never caught on, it's a fine clock, with a grey rope and an '80s dial. A little research (Wikipedia obvs!) throws up the stunningly poetic fact that Monsieur Flav wears the timepiece around his neck to remind people how precious time is. Heartwarming!

A big budget Hollywood film that spans the time period 1918 to 2005, only backwards (!) was bound to provide scope (and challenges) when it comes to costume and styling. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which opens in cinemas here next Friday, is the latest film by David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven), a director with an artist's eye for detail, costume being no exception.

With a range of eras to choose from, the Bohemian postwar style is what jumps out. Amongst stand out pieces, leading man Brad Pitt wears a series of jaunty driving caps in homage to Marlon Brando's fifties counter cultural icon.

At a recent friend's birthday one of the presents which got the most attention was Mr Taylor's Moustache Wax.

The friend in question does indeed sport a 'stache and the wax helps him keep it in shape with the merest hint of a handlebar curve at the sides. It also comes in various colours to add a little oopmh to your facial furniture and costs just £5.95 which is a great price for a gentleman's grooming classic. A great product which if you have facial hair you probably never knew you needed, but once tried will become indispensable.

Yay or Nay: Undercover Lace-Up Jeans

| | Comments (0)

90680_1.jpgDenim has been revolutionised in recent times and the last few years have seen denim be used by menswear designers to make a true statement. Whether skinny, twisted, acid bright faded, torn, studded, boot-leg: some might say that 'jeans maketh man.' And they wouldn't be far wrong.

So, what would these jeans say about a male? They lace up (with white leather might I add) the side and turn up at the bottom. The have a diamond pattern detail on the back pockets and come from one of the coolest labels of the moment.

Yay or Nay

kiehls creme silk groom hair style.jpg

Favoured by many stylists on location shoots for its miraculous ability to smooth the most wayward of locks into shape, Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom may be just the tonic your hair needs in this wintry weather.

Uniquely, it's a creme, not wax, mud, putty or (heaven forbid) a gel and like the best products feels like something of quality from a more stylish past. Rub a little of the buttery, ultra-rich substance into your palm and then smooth through your hair from roots to tips. Silk Groom adds instant gloss and shine and has a wondrous ability to hold without leaving a sticky, matt residue. Just the thing for keeping that side-parting in place, it's perfect when combined with one of the Kent brushes I posted about recently, enabling you to add a Cary Grant lustre to your weather-beaten do.

Available from the Kiehl's store in Covent Garden and from leading department stores.

Daniel Craig and Jamie Bell confirmed for Tintin

daniel craig tintin film.jpgDaniel Craig, pictured left at LAX recently, has been confirmed as the pirate Red Rackham in a new screen production of Tintin.

"The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn," is set for release next year, and I look forward to seeing how the costumes translate to the big screen, especially with Daniel Craig, someone who regularly tops the best dressed lists.

He joins Jamie Bell, cast in the starring role as Tintin, and a cracking supporting cast which includes Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the Thompson Twins, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock> The film also features Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook and with Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) and Joe Cornish (Adam &Joe) assisting Stephen Moffat on scriptwriting duties it promises to be mightily fun.

"Rake-thin, 12 year-old-looking, alien-eyed lady-boys"
- this is how one of my friends describes the male models of today. While I don't quite agree with his overly-harsh and rather sweeping statement, I have to admit that there are times where the men plastered over magazines and high-fashion ad campaigns just seem completely out-of-touch.

Gareth Pugh's first menswear show in Paris

| | Comments (0)

Gareth Pugh's first menswear show was greatly anticipated but having seen it I rather feel a bit of an anticlimax. It was exactly as I could have predicted with wetlook finishes, goathair epaulettes, and Margiela-style .He carried on the aesthetic from his last womenswear show, taking his origami facets onto puffa jackets and trousers, and accessorising with studded boots and feather headpieces.

Barack Obama on the cover of February's GQ

barack obama GQ February09.jpg

By my calculations Barack Obama has now racked up his third GQ cover which isn't bad going for someone who's only just been inaugurated. This cements his official position as probably the most stylish president America has ever had. I wonder if we'll get bored of the suit by summer though? Fingers crossed for some relaxed holiday pap snaps and the obligatory grey marl jogging in DC shots.

street-shots-paris-fashion-week-09-1.jpgParis Menswear Fashion Week began last Thursday and now that is has finished we are able to fully consider all the fashion inspiration from both on and off the runways. From Jefferson Hack and Alber Elbaz to male models and rake-thin boys wearing baggy cardies and vintage Chanel, the shows are an excuse for men to be outrageous and the results are often brilliant.

Look at Kanye West and friends in the image above. The mixture of neon colours and high-fashion logos with laid-black prints and over-the top fabrics gives me more than enough to drool over while I should be working/pretending to work/possibly paying attention to everyday goings on.

Keep reading Brandish everyday for more news from the fashion capitals.

Men's boutique of the week: A Child of the Jago

| | Comments (0)

Terrorist_orgy_tees.jpg

On a lonely stretch of Great Eastern Street more likely to be seen from a speeding cab than on a casual wander, men's boutique A Child of the Jago has been around since July 2008.

The brainchild of no less than Vivienne Westwood, Barnzley (founder of Acupuncture and Zoltar the Magnificent) and Westwood's son Joe Corre the shop is named after a novel set in these very environs (then a notorious slum) in the 1890s.
