Brooches for men: add a dash of style to your lapel

brooches.jpg

It's rare that a Christmas episode of Top of the Pops sheds light on a new sartorial trend but the most recent festive programme featured Kaiser Chiefs' singer Ricky Wilson sporting a vintage brooch on his lapel. Generally associated with elderly ladies of the Miss Marple variety, in previous eras a lapel pin was seen as part of a gentleman's proper attire. Looking very now, a great pin can add an individual touch to an otherwise anonymous peacoat or corduroy jacket lapel.

A quick trawl around the web reveals some lovely options: from Alexander McQueen at Yoox to the ingenious Digby and Iona at BBlessing. Meanwhile, on a different note, the fantastic Valet (a site which I'm loving by the way) is running a piece on feathered lapel pins based on the Bavarian 'gamsbart' (typically worn on a hunter's hat). Whether you go for the designer option, choose to dig out a gem at the fleamarket .. or fishing tackle shop for that matter .. this is a simple trend to add a charming, quirky note to your outfit.
