Men’s boutique of the week: The Old Curiosity Shop

Colin Chapman Designer Spotlight Leave a Comment

As if having the reputedly oldest shop in London (circa 1567) as your first retail space didn’t mark you out from the crowd, how about it also being the subject of a novel by Charles Dickens? And that’s exactly what design partnership Blaak have in The Old Curiosity Shop. Opening in September last year, Sachiko Okada and Aaron Sharif gave the original shop a makeover orchestrated by Fritz of Frick n’ Frack (designer of homes for Bjork and Boy George in the early 90s).

On a recent visit the combination of an historic space pared back to basics was the perfect backdrop for Blaak’s often dramatic menswear. The shop was previously solely an outlet for shoes by friend and now collaborator Daiko Kimura – designer of the drool-worthy boots Isabelle posted about yesterday. Blaak also collaborate with Oliver Goldsmith on bespoke eyewear.

The Old Curiosity Shop is in the same vicinity as The Sir John Soane’s Museum, a perfect combo for a day out in London exploring some of it’s quirkier corners. If you really can’t make it person or just want a sneaky preview, the Blaak collection (and those collaborations) is available online at farfetch.com.
