The Times has a feature at the moment detailing the changing size of the common tie as we go through decades of economic change. Apparently John Lewis has announced “a dramatic inch-loss of nearly 25 per cent in width over the past six months” with its most popular ties. Charlie Allen, the famous tailor Brandish recently had an exclusive sit-down with over the new ‘n’ improved England kit, told the Times that “the impact of economic turmoil on tie design can be traced back through the previous recessions of the 20th century. While postwar Britain and the Swinging Sixties embraced exaggerated prints and widths of up to 5in, the downturns of the 1930s and 1980s saw sizes reduce to as little as an inch.”
See after the jump for my Top 5 ‘Skinny Summer ties’– on the cheap for your enjoyment! (They’re all under £10)
New Look- Floral Skinny Tie- £6.00
This print will work well with plain white shirts and simple block colours in the summer but in the winter you can go to shirts with stripes and checks and wear with velvet blazers in plum and cherry.
Topman- Black Denim Tie- £10.00
Denim is an unusual fabric for accessories and can sometimes result in a Justin Timberlake-esque look but have no fear, this darker denim is understated enough to look laidback and on-trend with a dark suit.
Topman- Grey & Yellow 5cm Tie- £10.00
This tie is in-keeping with the Jonathan Saunders-led Ombre trend we’ve been banging on about for the last couple of seasons. The colours of this tie will look chilled this summer but bin it in the airport on the way back as by winter, the trend will be past.
Topman- Blue Chambrey 5cm Tie- £10.00
I love how multi-seasonal this tie is; the chambrey is awfully Fantastic Man and will complement a high-fashion short suit in a fabric such as linen but the lighter shade will work with darker tones during the winter.
River Island- Skinny Neon Tie- £9.00
Neon is hard to pull off now that it has been going a few seasons but keep your outfit to a minimalist minimum (read: monochrome colours and very matte fabrics,) and you will look BOT.
