The Daily Mail has a bit of an odd one. It has just run with the story that the latest name on Arsene Wenger’s defensive wishlist is Newcastle defender Steven Taylor.
The paper says
He played 25 times last year, his most Premier League games since 2008/09, but the arrival from Montpellier of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa means he has no guarantees next season.
So the logic is that he won’t be able to get into the Newcastle side next season but still might be good enough for Arsenal… The mind boggles.
I like Taylor though. He played well last season and was, well very solid and largely error-free. But to see him taking any defensive role at Arsenal other than as a replacement for Johan Djourou (or Sébastien Squillaci) seems very unlikely.
The Mail also says that Steve Bould is very keen to add some British players to beef up the back. Ashley Williams appeared to have been a done deal, though that one has gone a little quiet of late. It has been over a week since the papers were running with stories that Laudrup was resigned to losing his centre back. Maybe Taylor is the cheaper option, and the Arsenal manager is keeping his options open.If Wenger is pinning his faith in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as well as Thomas Vermaelen staying and recapturing some of the form he showed a couple of seasons back then Taylor would be a very useful squad member.
