Earlier today we reported that Athletic Bilbao had officially “rejected” a bid from Manchester United for midfielder Ander Herrera, well we can confirm this has now changed as Athletic Bilbao get ready to say goodbye to their star man.
Bilbao, notoriously tough negotiators have now gone back on their earlier tweet claiming to have rejected a bid from the Red Devils. They have confirmed that Ander Herrera himself payed the rest of his buyout clause on top of the Manchester club’s bid.
Herrera becomes Louis Van Gaal’s first signing at his new club as he seeks to reshape a team that had its worst season in the history of the Premier League. Van Gaal is still in charge of Netherlands who continue in the World Cup but upon returning will seek to add promising English left-back Luke Shaw to his ranks too.
It is thought Manchester United will pay €36m (£28.85m) towards the deal with Herrera himself making up the difference to meet the buy-out clause. Herrera is a midfielder player who played 29 league games for Bilbao last season and will be effective in chance creation, he made 53 opportunities for his teammates over the course of the year. After seeing the likes of Fabregas join Chelsea already this window, a big deal was needed to get the ball rolling for Manchester United.
