Luis Suarez will miss the rest of the World Cup as he received his 9 match international ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on Tuesday evening. He will also be banned from football for 4 months, affecting his club Liverpool.
This of course is Suarez’s third suspension for biting after being found guilty when captain of Dutch side Ajax, receiving a 7 game ban. He was also suspended for 10 games for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013.
Luis Suarez isn’t only banned from football but his pocket will also take a hit after being fined 100,000 Swiss francs. Football’s governing body Fifa said: “Such behaviour cannot be tolerated.” Uruguay will initially feel the pain of the punishment as he misses their Last 16 game with Colombia on 28 June. Suarez was the difference as his country clashed with England in this year’s World Cup Group D fixture, the striker scoring twice.
This will potentiality scupper Liverpool’s plans for the new season as he will be absent until 26 October 2014. This puts Suarez out of 9 Premier League matches as well as 3 Champions League matches, a hammer blow to lose a player with his record. The Uruguayan scored 31 goals in 33 games last season as well as sweeping the Premier League awards by winning the Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Football Writes Player of the Season.
Liverpool will also begin to fear whether Suarez will be allowed to be sold, with FIFA banning “from all footballing activity”, a transfer away from the club comes into question. Real Madrid and Barcelona were circling for the poacher and this ban could cost his club many millions of pounds.
