Cesc Fabregas joined Chelsea amid speculation that Arsenal were ready to re-sign their coveted centre midfielder. Chelsea duly won the battle and have now retained the services of a wonderful technician in the centre of their midfield for a bargin price of around £30m.
However, there is something that doesn’t quite meet the eye within this transfer saga. Whilst at the World Cup, Fabregas revealed that Arsene Wenger had said that the Spaniard was not needed in his squad as Mesut Ozil was already occupying his position. Fair enough. But, if we look over to the ever-growing Chelsea squad, we see a host of world-class players currently dominating that midfield position in comparison to the Arsenal squad.
With the likes of: Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Ramires, Willian, Chalobah, Mikel & Matic all fighting for a place; Fabregas now joins the conquest to gain a first team spot. Whereas, at Arsenal there are only a couple of players who would challenge Fabregas for a starting place. Ramsey and Ozil being the obvious choices, but with Arsenal adopting the single striker, surely Fabrgeas and Ozil could have played together.
Maybe the “Ozil is already in my position” is a smokescreen for the Spanish midfielder. Potentially, Fabregas knows the lack of squad depth in comparison to Chelsea will lead to more silverware silence at the Emirates. At Barcelona, the former Arsenal man was immersed in trophies and a winning ethic; maybe he doesn’t want to return to a starvation of winning.
Chelsea like to play two anchor men with 3 attacking midfielder’s in-front of them. Matic, Ramires and Mikel occupy the defensive duties with Hazard, Oscar, Willian & Salah battling it out for the attacking positions. On the face of it, it seems Fabregas may struggle to attain a starting place in this Chelsea side.
The new Chelsea signing insisted that, “Mourinho said what I needed to hear”; it seems the “Special One” has done it again and got his man ahead of his competitors. Nevertheless, it’s up to Fabregas to prove his worth and show Chelsea why he is their main man.
Arsenal fans, what are your feelings on the Fabregas deal?
