TalkSport are reporting that Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of joining Premier League rivals Manchester United.
The Belgian could follow former team-mate Robin van Persie to Manchester United after leaving Arsenal. Vermaelen who is currently on international duty with Belgium at the World Cup has 1-year remaining on his contract at the Emirates. Arsenal may want to cash in now before losing out on a free transfer like they have with Sagna.
With the fee said to be around £11m, Arsenal may feel that it isn’t enough to prize away their captain. However, after a mountain of injuries and omission from the starting XI, Wenger may envisage the sale as a positive for the club as he looks to lure in another compatriot to accompany Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the heart of the Gunners defence.
With Wenger yet to spend any money this transfer window, the Frenchman seems to be quite happy to leave his business till later than other clubs. With Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City & Chelsea all spending money already, Arsenal may get left behind in the race to sign the top players.
With such a big character like Vermaelen leaving the London club, Arsenal fans may start sweating over what the summer holds for the forthcoming campaign.
