Gareth Barry made 32 Premier League appearances for Everton last season whilst on loan from Manchester City and now Roberto Martinez hopes to secure him on a permanent deal following his release from the Manchester club.
Martinez is a big fan of the 33 year old midfielder saying, “Gareth is such a unique person, I have been so impressed and I think everyone at the club has taken to him.” He also described him as the “perfect fit” for his squad but acknowledged, “in a World Cup summer everything goes slow and everything happens at its own pace.”
Barry was once a target for Everton’s merseyside rivals Liverpool who almost signed him for £20m under Rafael Benitez whilst at Aston Villa. Barry instead joined Manchester City, making 132 Premier League appearances as well as winning the FA Cup and Premier League title in 4 seasons at the club. Gareth Barry has represented England on 53 occasions.
Martinez faces a challenge to keep hold of some of his best players once he returns home from punditry duties at the World Cup in Brazil. Ross Barkley and Jon Stones are understood to have many admirers across Europe but Martinez will need them to remain at the Toffees along with additional signings to continue the work from a good season last year.
