Arsenal update: Carvalho edges closer and an unlikely exit

After links to Kherida, Beneder and Schneiderlin it now seems that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made his mind up about a defensive midfielder. After an iffy display against Monaco, where once again it was clear that Larsen needed a tougher, more defensive-minded midfield Wenger appears to be close to signing William Carvalho.

Apparently the Portuguese newspaper Ojogo is reporting that Arsenal will win the race to sign the player ahead of their Premiership rivals Man United

And after years of austerity Carvalho’s arrival at the Emirates will take Arsenal’s summer spending spree over the £90m mark. And there are rumours that it could go even higher too.

One player who has been linked with a move from The Emirates though is 32 year old Mikkel Arteta. The popular midfielder is apparently wanted by Spanish side Athletic Bilbao. The clubs have a policy of only fielding players from the area and Arteta qualifies because of his Basque roots.

It is possible that the Spaniard could be offloaded to fund this spectacular purchase.
