The battle to sign Borussia Dortmund’s highly rated central defender Mats Hummels appears to be heating up with Arsenal set to rival Manchester United for the World Cup winner.
United have apparently already have offered £16 million for the player, which Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has laughed off, and there’s no word yet on increased bid
Meanwhile Arsenal are rumoured to mulling over an offer for the player who allegedly has a price tag of £30 million. Were he to sign the move could be the catalyst that sees the Gunners’ Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen heading to Old Trafford. Although after his experience selling RVP to United, it seems that Arsene Wenger favours selling his captain to a club outside the English premier league.
Arsenal’s Champions League status, plus their growing band of German stars, might help sway the German to the join the Gunners.
However, last season, the two Arsenal centre backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscienly have formed a tight bond – so would Wenger spend £30 million on a back-up defender?
Mertesacker, however, will be turning 30 this year, so Wenger will be needing to look for a long term replacement for the German defender.
