Benfica’s Super Cup celebrations break trophy!

Benfica last night saw off Rio Ave FC via a penalty shootout to win their first Portuguese Super Cup since 2005. However, watch the video below as their celebrations go wrong and they break the trophy!

As reserve goalkeeper Paulo Lopes climbs on top of the net to lift the cup he breaks the glass and cuts his hand in the process. Then follows a humorous attempt by striker Lima to hide the gap in the trophy by plugging it with a scarf! The scenes are perhaps a reminder of the time Sergio Ramos dropped the Spanish Copa del Rey under Real Madrid open-top bus for the celebration parade.

It was Benefica’s number 1 goalkeeper Artur who was the hero last night though as he saved 3 penalties in the shoot-out from Tarantini, Diego Lopes and Tiago Pinto to give Benfica the success they really deserved over the 120 minutes.

Benfica lost to Sevilla is the UEFA Europa League final at the end of last season, that continued a terrible losing streak in European Cup finals. A lot of fans put this down to “The Curse of Bela Guttmann” who swore in 1962 after his spat with the club’s board that Benfica wouldn’t win a European Cup for 100 years!
