Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has publicly announced his expectations to sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini this summer.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Poyet said, “The idea was to have the deal done a few weeks ago, but for different reasons it was impossible, but we are confident that maybe in the next few days we can do something about Fabio. I’m always thinking that we can add quality players, especially the ones we know, and let’s hope that confidence I am trying to bring to the club is confirmed…with the signing of Borini.”
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan to the Black Cats and made 40 appearances for Sunderland where he scored 10 goals. The Italian was a real handful for defences and that is why Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers have slapped him with a £14m price tag on his head. It seems that Sunderland are happy to match that price tag as Borini looks to finally settle in the Premier League after being shipped out on loan and constantly moving clubs.
Sunderland have already been busy this summer, completing the signings of: Jack Rodwell, Billy Jones, Jordi Gomez, Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt to his squad. With these healthy additions to his squad, Poyet will feel his side can begin to push up the Premier League for at least a mid-table finish.
Poyet wants to see the signing of Borini completed before their campaign kicks off on Saturday as they travel away to West Brom.
