Sunderland have completed their seventh signing of this summer with the capture of Championship star Will Buckley from Brighton & Hove Albion. The deal is officially an undisclosed fee but believed to be in the region of £2.5m.
Buckley started his career at Rochdale where he made 59 League 2 appearances for the club before moving to Watford in January 2010. He played in 39 Championship games for the Hornets and earned a club record £1m move to Brighton where he firmly established himself in the second tier. With 95 Brighton Championship appearances and 19 goals, speculation was rife that a Premier League move was imminent leading Sunderland to fork out for the winger.
Buckley, 24 years old, will be reunited with his former Brighton manager Gus Poyet and will fight for his place in the Black Place starting XI for their Premier League opening with West Brom on Saturday.
With a fantastic chance to prove himself in one of the world’s best leagues the opportunity is one the Oldham born man could not pass up. He joins Jack Rodwell, Costel Pantillimon, Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones, Patrick Van Aanholt and Santiago Vergini as the new boys at the Stadium of Light for the 2014/15 season.
