Arsenal sold captain and solid defender Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona this summer for £15m. With Per Mertesacker struggling for fitness and Laurent Koscielny their only other centre-back it appears Arsene Wenger is now hunting Atlético Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld as cover.
The Daily Mirror report that the 25 year old, who was linked with heavily with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur last summer, could be on his way to the Premier League before the end of the month. Gunners’ new boy Callum Chambers, a right-back by trade, has currently had his first-team chance by filling in at centre-half. Wenger would do well to secure Toby Alderweireld who can play comfortably in the middle or on the right.
Atlético Madrid seem willing to sell the Belgium international as he was left out of the Spanish Super Cup squad that drew 1-1 with Real Madrid on Tuesday evening. Diego Simeone has changed his side this window after Diego Costa left for Chelsea and they club has spent over €100m.
Toby Alderwerield, who has 37 Belgium caps, would join Chambers, full-back Mathieu Debuchy, goalkeeper David Ospina and big signing from Barcelona, winger Alexis Sanchez in moving to the Emirates Stadium.
