Manchester United have today been rumoured to be interested in Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso. The speculation comes as a result of Luka Modric’s new deal for Madrid whilst Toni Kroos has just made the switch to the Bernabeu, meanwhile, Sami Khedira is still knocking on the door of the first team.
At 32-years-old, Alonso still possesses real quality in the middle but may seek one new challenge before thinking about hanging up his boots. A midfielder reminiscent to that of Paul Scholes, Manchester United may be interested in Alonso’s ability on the ball to help dominate the midfield.
The former Liverpool man has been said to have returned to Madrid training unfit, according to reports from the Metro. Ousted from the squad for now, could that be the tipping point for Ancelotti who could offload Alonso now and cash in?
A player that would fit into the United formation, Alonso could be deployed in that holding midfield role alongside Fletcher to help protect the back four whilst keeping the ball moving to create an attack.
As speculation hots up, it seems that United are becoming more interested by the deal every hour and an official bid for the Spanish international could beckon.
