Sky Sports have confirmed that West Brom have made their tenth addition to their squad this summer, Albion boss Alan Irvine has signed Silvestre Varela from Porto on loan for the rest of the season.
Varela was part of the Portugal World Cup squad this summer and scored the last minute equaliser against the USA in a 2-2 draw. The 29-year-old winger joins the lengthy list of summer arrivals, including: Brown Ideye, Sebastien Pocognoli, Jason Davidson, Joleon Lescott, Georgios Samaras, Cristian Gamboa, Chris Baird, Craig Gardner and Andre Wisdom.
Capped 26 times for his country, Varela will give Irvine experience and a multitude of options as the Portuguese man is a versatile signing who can play up front and on either flank.
Speaking in the wake of the deal, the Baggies boss offered his praises to the winger, “Silvestre is a vastly-experienced player, both with Porto and his national team, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to secure his services,” Irvine said.
“He’s got pace and power, gets his fair share of goals and is also a creator of chances for others.
“He’s a fantastic addition to our squad.”
