Argentina win World Cup final rematch!

Last night whilst most of Britain chose between the Great British Bake Off or the snore-fest that was England v Norway, Germany and Argentina took part in a World Cup final rematch. The cracker of a game finished 4-2 to Argentina with the hosts overwhelmed, namely by new Manchester United signing Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria cost Manchester United almost £60m in the closing week of the summer transfer window and showed his immense talent by providing 3 assists and scoring the fourth after 50 minutes. Argentina’s other goal scorers were Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero, Tottenham Hotspurs’ Erik Lamela & Swansea City new boy Federico Fernández.

Germany did manage to recover some face as Chelsea’s Andre Schürrle netted after 52 minutes then Bayern Munich’s Mario Götze, who scored the winner in the final on 13 July, scored after 78 minutes. World Champions Germany saw their 18 match unbeaten run come to an end with the likes of Per Mertesacker, Miroslav Klose and former captain Philipp Lahm missing as they have now retired.

Despite the hammering, German head coach Joachim Löw was defiant: “We would have beaten Argentina in the final on July 13 even if Di Maria had been playing. He couldn’t have beaten us on that day.” New Argentina boss and former Barcelona head coach Gerardo Martino meanwhile, lauded the Red Devils’ new signing Di Maria: “Di Maria is one of the best four or five players in the world and so his performance didn’t surprise me. His absence {in the World Cup final] was noticeable.”

Is this a sign of a change in world football? Or was it just a excellent result for Argentina in a “pointless friendly”? I would lean to it being the later!
