Arsenal are believed to be close to making a move for Celtic’s defender Virgil Van Dijk according to the Daily Star. The move would be worth around £8m and would help bolster Arsene Wenger’s back line.
The Gunners have suffered something of an injury crisis at points this season and this has forced them to make a number of decision to field youth team members or players out of position. To try and solve this it appears that Arsenal will dip into the transfer market in January and purchase Celtic’s Dutch centre back Virgil Van Dijk.
The 23-year-old joined Celtic in June 2013 for around £2.6m from Eredivisie club FC Groningen where he made 62 appearances scoring 7 goals. The 6ft 4in centre back has played 42 times for Celtic in the Scottish top flight and has attracted admirers from around Europe, particularly Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League.
It is believed Arsene Wenger had Van Dijk scouted in Celtic’s Europa League clash with Dinamo Zagreb a few weeks ago but Louis Van Gaal will hope he can poach the Dutchman using his Netherlands connections. However, Van Gaal failed to cap the U23 international for the full national side and Wenger is now desperate to make him part of his side as soon as possible.
