Tottenham Hotspur are desperately trying to get rid of unwanted Cameroon international Benoit Assou-Ekotto. However, according to the Daily Mirror the player’s wages are holding up any potential deal.
Assou-Ekotto is 30-years-old but is nowhere near the Spurs full side meaning his £40,000-a-week wages are being paid with no appearances being made. The left-back began his career in France with Lens making 67 league showings before moving to Spurs for around £3.5m in the summer of 2006.
Since his switch to England, Assou-Ekotto became very important to Spurs and has 155 Premier League matches to his name for the club. Known for his wild hair he was capable of going forwards whilst remaining responsible at the back but in recent seasons has fallen out of the first team. He spent much of last season on loan in the Championship with Harry Redknapp’s QPR, making 27 appearances during their promotion campaign.
Now Spurs want to get rid of him with Crystal Palace interested, as well as QPR again. However the issue remains his wages as the left-back refuses to drop his wages from what Spurs currently pay him. With 24 caps for his country he would add experience to any Premier League side if a deal can be done.
