Southampton football club went under a major revamp over the summer transfer window as previously key men such as Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw were sold on to Premier League rivals. Manager Mauricio Pochettino also joined Spurs but since then new boss Ronald Koeman has developed the Saints into genuine top 4 contenders.
Palermo’s number 9 striker Paulo Dybala is aged only 20 but has become an important player to Serie A outfit and is now on Southampton’s wanted list according to the Daily Mirror. Dybala began his career in Argentina with Instituto and played 40 league matches for the club, scoring 17 goals. Dybala has been touted as the next Sergio Aguero and he joined Palermo in July 2012. Since then he has played over 60 games in La Liga, scoring 11 goals with 2 of them coming from this current campaign.
Southampton are now thought to be scouting the player as Portuguese Champions League representatives Benfica, also join the race. Dybala’s contract is coming to an end in the summer with Palermo and with no news on a new deal it is understood the Italians will be willing to cash in on the striker in January rather than lose him on a free.
Southampton have done well in the transfer market since Koeman took the helm. Graziano Pelle a particular example. If this rumour does have some weight to it, could Dybala become another inspired signing?
