Luis Suarez, he is one of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League but unfortunately he is also one of the most controversial. The Daily Mirror today contains some more quote from the magician talking about that famous Steven Gerrard slip that in part, cost Liverpool the title.
Luis Suarez, now 27-years-old, joined Liverpool in January 2011 from Dutch outfit Ajax for £22.8m. He would remain at Anfield until this summer and during his stay in the Premier League he would establish himself as one of the best players in the world, scoring an impressive 69 Premier League goals in just 110 matches. Last season his league stats read 33 games, 31 goals and his desire almost led Liverpool to their first title in over two decades.
Infamously Steven Gerrard, Liverpool’s icon captain, slipped during a key title decider against Chelsea towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign and his mistake let Demba Ba through on goal to sink Liverpool’s challenge into a second placed finish. Now Suarez has written about that error, saying: “If I had been in Stevie’s shoes, I don’t know if I would have been able to carry on playing. Emotionally, it must have been very, very hard.” Suarez continued: “The captain, the former youth-teamer, the one-club man, a Scouser born and bred, and he was the unlucky one to make a crucial mistake… I’m convinced that if Chelsea had not scored like that, they would not have scored at all. And once you are a goal down against them, it’s virtually impossible”.
Luis Suarez was sold by Liverpool in the summer for £65m (according to Barcelona, some reports say £75m). This followed his idiotic actions at the World Cup in Brazil when he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder, the third biting incident in the Uruguayan’s career. The 79 time capped international was handed a 4 month ban from the sport and has only recently returned but his Barcelona debut did not go as planned as his Catalan club lost the El Clasico derby against fierce rivals Real Madrid.
Liverpool fans, are you sick of hearing about the slip now? Do you believe this would be different this season if you had won the Premier League title?
