Chris Smalling – sent off in the Manchester Derby and costing Manchester United the clash. He has received heavy criticism from Red Devils fans and has in some ways failed to live up to the potential he first promised but now the Daily Mirror believe he could be set to an Arsenal switch.

Arsenal have had serious defensive problems this season with injury upon injury and so it is thought that Arsene Wenger could be ready to snap up the 24-year-old Smalling should Louis Van Gaal be willing to let him go. The Gunners’ boss has admitted that the Londoners have issues at the back and will look to rectify that in January but with Mats Hummels linked; I’m sure Arsenal fans would be disappointed if the big signing actually turns out to be Chris Smalling.

Smalling joined Manchester United from Fulham for the 2010/11 season. He began his career at minnows Maidstone United but earned his chance to sign for Cottagers Fulham in 2008. He played 13 Premier League matches for Fulham before making the Manchester United switch but has since struggled to make himself a regular at Old Trafford, playing 76 times in the Premier League.

The 12 time capped England international is thought to be willing to make a switch to play regular first team football, the absence of Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny prompting Arsenal to look elsewhere.

Arsenal fans, would you be happy if Wenger’s long promised defender turns out to be Chris Smalling?
