Chelsea and Manchester United looking at French defender

Premier League duo, Chelsea and Manchester United are both looking at France and Real Madrid defender, Raphael Varane according to the Express. The pair have both been linked with a move for the defender and now Chelsea and United will fight it out to sign the Frenchman in January.

With Sergio Ramos and Pepe occupying the central defence positions for Madrid, Varane has had to settle for a place amongst the substitutes of late. However, the Frenchman is keen to get more first team appearances under his belt as he looks to be considered as a regular for his country. A move away from the Bernabeu may be the best option for Varane; with whispers of interest from Chelsea and United arriving in Spain, the 21-year-old may consider a move to the Premier League.

Chelsea would be a preferable choice having worked under Jose Mourinho, but with John Terry and Gary Cahill yet to lose a game as a defensive pair, Varane may find it difficult to settle. United would therefore pose as the better choice given their defensive frailties recently. A move in January could prove to be a popular choice for Varane and United as both are looking for each other.

In spite of the speculation, Madrid won’t let Varane go for nothing, Real are reportedly looking for a fee of around £19m. A realistic fee for United to pay without breaking the bank. A player who despite his youth has a large amount of experience at the top level.

Varane would be the perfect fit for United, but will Van Gaal go for him?
