Sheffield United clearly have a dilemma on their hands. Do they re-sign Ched Evans and risk losing advocates of the club or do they reject the option to sign a former player?
To make their decision tougher, one high profile advocate, Olympian, Jessica Ennis-Hill has revealed to BBC Sport that she wants her name removed from the club stand that was named after her if United re-sign Evans.
“Those in positions of influence should respect the role they play in young people’s lives and set a good example,” said Olympic champion Ennis-Hill. “If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs.” Meanwhile, over 157,000 people have signed a petition saying they do not want Ched Evans back at the club.
United boss, Nigel Clough has said the club are still not in a position where they have decided whether or not to sign Evans. With a number of club sponsors also insisting they will have to re-evaluate their involvement at the club should Evans return.
It appears that the majority are in favour of not signing Evans, but until the club make an informed decision, nothing can be taken for granted.
