INo you did read that correctly, Barcelona’s potential 2016 president, Joan Laporta is interested in signing Real Madrid phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo!! Well, that’s according to French publication Le Figaro who say Laporta has meet with Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.
Joan Laporta was president of La Liga dominators Barcelona between 2003-2010. In that time he oversaw the arrival of Pep Guardiola as manager and would take some of the credit for the unbelievable side that developed at the club in that time. Laporta was replaced as president but is considering his election campaign for 2016 as to whether he wants to take the helm again.
Cristiano Ronaldo began his career at Sporting CP making 25 first team league appearances before moving on to Manchester United in the Premier League in the summer of 2003 for just over £12m. Ronaldo’s development was remarkable under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford and he would go on to play 196 Premier League games, scoring 84 goals as a winger. In June 2009, Real Madrid agreed a deal for £80m to bring Ronaldo to Spain, something that now actually seems cheap.
At Real Madrid Ronaldo has become an icon with 195 in 175 La Liga matches and 275 goals in 263 games in all competitions. His super agent Jorge Mendes has previously said he is staying at the Santiago Bernabéu until he retires and many will call a move between Barcelona and Real Madrid impossible. However, let us not forget that Luis Figo once match the switch to Real Madrid from Barcelona, something that caused the Catalan fans to throw a severed pigs head at Figo in El Clasico.
Of course we can all be skeptical about the prospect of Laporta actually being able to attract Ronaldo to the Camp Nou. Added to that Real Madrid will be highly unlikely to sell their forward meaning Barcelona will be required to play his 1 billion Euros release clause.
