Arsenal slipped to 8th place in the Premier League on Saturday as they were beaten at home by Manchester United. After 12 matches the Gunners have only 17 points and a big issue has been the defence which when not suffering from injury has fallen below par.

The Daily Star have linked Swiss centre-back Fabian Schär to Arsenal in January. Schär is 22-years-old and currently plays for FC Basel in his native Switzerland. He began for his local club, FC Wil 1900, playing 52 league matches and scoring 9 goals. In July 2012 Basel purchased the young talent and continued to develop him as a hot prospect.

Schär has played 56 league games for Basel but his contract expires at the end of the season if he does not take up his option at a new deal. Basel are thought to want £10m for his services but Arsenal will have to try and negotiate a lower figure to save Basel from losing him on a free.

Schär is 6ft 1in and has earned 9 full caps for Switzerland as well as featuring in the 2012 Olympics in London. His signature will certainly help Arsenal if they can convince him to move to the Premier League. Arsene Wenger will also please the Gunners’ fans today in his announcement that Lukas Podolski will not leave the club in the winter window: “It is not established at all that he will leave at Christmas. He is not for sale and there is no offer.”
