On 16 August the football world was stunned by the video that emerged of Bastia’s Brazilian striker Brandao head-butting PSG’s Thiago Motta. PSG had beaten Bastia 2-0 at home in Ligue 1 but the game was marred by the head-butt that took place in the tunnel after the match.

The video can been seen below as the 34-year-old waits for Thiago Motta to come down the tunnel before butting him for apparently insulting him during the tie. Brandao received a 20,000 euro fine and a six-month ban from football but BBC Sport today reported how Brandao has also been sentenced to a month’s jail term.

Brandao joined Bastia in August 2014 and the game of the head-butt was only his second showing for his new club. Brandao had previously played for a number of clubs, including Shakhtar Donetsk, Marseille, Cruzeiro and Saint-Ettiene, actually winning the Ligue 1 French title in 2009/10 with Marseille and 3 league titles in Ukraine with Shakhtar.

Brandao’s lawyer expects the Brazilian to get away without spending any time in jail as they push for him to be handed community service. Thiago Motta told police: “On the pitch Brandao said he’d be waiting for me afterwards, but I never thought he’d actually do it”. Now the decision has been made do you think the punishment was fair or should PSG have got their desire that the striker was banned for life?
