Manchester United have had serious problems at the back this season, injures and mistakes costing them plenty of points. However, according to the Daily Star they are about to target Real Madrid’s French youngster Raphael Varane.

Raphael Varane began his career with Lens in France where he played 23 Ligue 1 matches before attracting the interest of Spanish giants Real Madrid. Los Blancos moved to sign him in June 2011 and paid a reported €10m for his services as he joined with a 6-year-contract. As he was still so young Varane continued his development being drip-fed into the Real Madrid first team.

The 21-year-old has now played 44 times in La Liga for Real Madrid, 84 times in all competitions. He has won La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the Supercopa de España. However Varane has been linked heavily to the Premier League recently with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all desperate to grab his services from the Spaniards.

Louis Van Gaal has admitted Manchester United’s defence needs improving and with Gerard Pique and Ron Vlaar two other targets, it seems Raphael Varane could be the best bet for the future. The centre-back, who can also play at right-back, has already earned 17 caps for France and Manchester United would win a serious battle if they manage to tie down Varane’s signature.

Manchester United fans, who would you prefer? Pique, Vlaar or Varane?
