Barcelona defender, Thomas Vermaelen is set to miss the next five months of the season with a thigh injury that requires surgery. The Belgian defender joined from Arsenal in the summer for £15m.

However, the former Arsenal man is yet to make is debut for the Spanish club as Vermaelen’s injury woes continue. A player who leads by example on and off the field, a rock in the heart of the defence, Vermaelen is a player of real quality when fully fit.

Vermaelen picked up the injury during the Brazil 2014 World Cup playing against Russia.

Arsenal may see their sale as a successful piece of business, a player who is not getting any younger at 29-years-old. Selling him last summer for a big fee for a player who hadn’t played much football because of injuries seems to be a fine piece of business by the Gunners.

However, Barcelona will know one the Belgian is back to full fitness, he could be a real asset for this new side.
