With Brendan Rodgers coming under increasing pressure at Anfield but according to The Independent, he is set to be handed a boost over his pursuit of Martin Montoya. The right-back has told Barcelona he wants to leave the club in January.
Martin Montoya, now 23-years-old, joined Barcelona in 1999 and rose through their prestigious La Masia youth academy. He graduated their development system, spending time in the B side playing 75 league matches. Montoya had growing interest from fellow Spanish clubs but was given his Barcelona first team chance in 2011. Since then he featured in 38 La Liga ties, 56 Barcelona games in all competitions.
However, with just 1 showing in all competitions in 2014/15, Montoya’s agent has told the Barcelona board the right-back wants to leave the club. Juan De Dios Carrasco said: “Tomorrow there will be a meeting with Barcelona to communicate the decision we have already made, he will leave the club in January. There are clubs interested from England, Italy and German. When a player wants to leave Barça, as Montoya does, I do not think the club will oppose his departure.”
Montoya has been a target for Liverpool for a number of months as Brendan Rodgers seeks a right-back replacement for Glen Johnson. Johnson has been under criticism for his performances and is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season meaning Montoya would be able to play as an immediate alternative.
Liverpool fans, do you think Montoya is a good prospect for the Reds?
