Manchester United and Manchester City are major rivals on the pitch but according to the Daily Express they are set to do battle again over Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic.
26-year-old Ivan Rakitic began his career with FC Basel and impressed so earned a move to Bundesliga club Schalke 04. At Schalke he appeared in 97 league matches before joining La Liga side Sevila for just €2.5m in January 2011. The midfielder fully established himself with the Spanish club, playing 117 league ties, scoring 27. With the Barcelona midfield beginning to age, a £14m bid secured his services for the Catalan giants.
However reports in Spain suggest manager Luis Enrique is not convinced by Rakitic who has played 20 times in all competitions. With 14 La Liga showings, he is still behind Xavi in the midfield pecking order and is thought to be tempted by a Premier League switch should the opportunity arise.
The 69 capped Croatian international is on the shopping list of both Manchester City and Manchester United. Manchester United have been hunting for a central midfielder for a few months, Kevin Strootman their number one target who now seems likely to remain at Roma. Manchester City meanwhile have relied on Frank Lampard this campaign who is only on loan so a permanent replacement may be a top priority.
