Liverpool’s season has not exactly gone to plan following the successes of 2013/14. The aim was to push on after a 2nd place in the Premier League and make an impact in the Champions League, they sit in 11th in the Premier League whilst being dumped out of the later in the group stages.

Talk has intensified that Brendan Rodgers’ time at Anfield is coming to an end, even despite reaching the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup. Football-Italia understand Liverpool’s board took the major decision to offer Rafa Benitez a return to the club, an offer Benitez turned down. The revelation is certainly an interesting one for Rodgers whose position will no doubt be compromised now.

54-year-old Rafael Benitez is currently in charge of Italian club Napoli but enjoyed a successful time with Liverpool between June 2004 – June 2010. Benitez took charge of a total of 350 matches, winning 196 of them at a win percentage of 56%. The Spaniard won an FA Cup, an FA Community Shield, the UEFA Super Cup and most spectacularly the 2005 UEFA Champions League against AC Milan.

Benitez’s spell with Napoli has been mixed and there has been constant talk he is set to leave the Serie A side. In a press conference, Benitez has confirmed he received two offers from other clubs that are thought to be Liverpool and another previous team, Valencia. Benitez said: “My contract? I don’t want to talk about it… I want to win in the here and now. I’ve said no to two offers, because I’m the Coach of Napoli, for now I want to work here, then we’ll see. In the past 15 days I’ve turned down two offers, but I won’t tell you who.”

Liverpool fans, do you want to see Brendan Rodgers leave Anfield? If he does would Rafa Benitez be your choice of replacement?
