Steven Gerrard is perhaps the greatest player ever to pull on a Liverpool jersey. The dedicated and loyal Reds captain though is getting on a bit meaning the club must look for a longer term replacement. The Daily Mirror think Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph could be the perfect man.
25-year-old Fabian Delph began in the Bradford City youth academy before moving to Leeds United where he was handed his professional debut in May 2007. Delph gained experience with Leeds United in the Championship and League One, featuring in 51 league fixtures for the club. In August 2009, Aston Villa won the race to Delph’s signature beating a number of sides to it and he has since featured in 91 Villa Premier League matches.
Despite a short loan spell back at Leeds in 2012, Delph is now a vital component in the Aston Villa midfield, something that earned him an England call up, a chance he took with 3 caps now to his name. Delph is currently coming to the end of his Aston Villa contract, being free to leave Villa Park on a free transfer in the summer.
Delph shares an agent with Steven Gerrard and that certainly makes the job of Brendan Rodgers easier should he choose to target the midfielder. Aston Villa meanwhile are set for a busy January convincing Fabian Delph and Ron Vlaar to sign new contracts with both on the verge of free agent departures. Liverpool fans, do you think Fabian Delph is someone who is fit to replace Steven Gerrard if given the opportunity?
