Manchester United are openly in pursuit of a new centre-back, Louis Van Gaal’s boys being in trouble at the back due to injures and suspensions this campaign. A long running target has been Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels but according to the Daily Express, Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi is another aim in January.
Nicolas Otamendi is 26-years-old and the 18 capped Argentinean began his career with local club Velez Sarsfield where he played 40 league matches. In August 2010 Otamendi was given his chance in Europe as Portuguese giants Porto purchased him for €4m. After 77 leagues matches for Porto, the centre-back moved to Spain with Valencia who bought him for €12m at the beginning of 2014. After a short spell on loan with Atlético Mineiro, Otamendi established himself with the La Liga club, playing 16 times in all competitions this season.
Mats Hummels meanwhile is also 26-years-old and is well known to football fans across the world. The 36 capped German international won the World Cup this summer in Brazil and after beginning his career with Bayern Munich, the centre-back has become vital to Borussia Dortmund.
With Arsenal and Manchester City also chasing Mats Hummels it is thought Manchester United are willing to turn to Nicolas Otamendi who is valued at £40m. This figure is lower than the £47m starting price of the German meaning if Manchester United are struggling to secure a much needed defender at the end of the January transfer window, expect a bid for Otamendi to materialise.
Manchester United fans, how do you feel about the chase for Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi?
