Southampton fans will be pleased to hear their manager Ronald Koeman has plans to bring in players over the January transfer window. BBC Sport carry quotes linking the Saints to Elijero Elia of Werder Bremen.
Elia is 27-years-old and currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga. However Koeman is desperate to strengthen his squad that has been hit by injuries in recent weeks. leading to poor results despite a strong start to the season. With Sadio Mane off to the African Cup of Nations in January and Jay Rodriguez still on the treatment table, it seems the Saints have to work swiftly to bring bodies in.
Elia began his professional career with ADO Den Haag, with a short academy stint with Ajax. After 56 league showings for Den Haag he moved to FC Twente where the winger developed further over 62 league appearances. Elia also transferred to Hamburg in the Bundesliga before a 4 game spell with Juventus in Serie A. Now in the Bundesliga again with Werder Bremen, Elia has 57 league matches and 4 goals to his name.
Koeman said about the prospect of Elia: “He is one of the players on our list to bring in in January, It’s still not done but yes, I am interested in the player. If he signs for Southampton, I think he will be a good option. We need at least one more player up front because we lose Sadio Mane in January for the Africa Cup. We need another player for that position and he is a good option.
Koeman confirmed that 27 Netherlands capped Elia would initially sign on a short term deal, offering him the chance to impress and earn a permanent contract: “If he does sign for us, it will first be as a loan deal.”
