Barcelona have today fuelled talk that they are a club in crisis as Director of Football Andoni Zubizarreta has been sacked. The official website announcement reported that President, Josep Maria Bartomeu made the decision to terminate his contract.
Andoni Zubizarreta joined Barcelona in his role as Director of Football back in July 2010 and oversaw some big signings at the Catalan giants. However things this campaign have not been pretty at the Camp Nou with Barcelona slipping to another defeat last night to David Moyes’ Real Sociedad.
Barcelona are currently under a transfer embargo for transfer irregularities over the signing of a number of youth players. The ban was set to begin last summer but the decision was reversed as Barcelona appealed the punishment. This meant it was suspended until 2015 and allowed the incomings of Luis Suarez in particular. Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen were added to improve the club’s shaky defence but now another appeal has failed there is nothing Barcelona can do to improve their side in 2015.
Andoni Zubizarreta earned 126 caps when playing for Spain as a goalkeeper and became a Barcelona icon during 301 appearances in La Liga between 1986-1994. Former Barcelona President Sandro Rosell appointed him as Director of Football, taking over from Txiki Begiristain who had great success at Barça.
On the pitch Barcelona have fallen behind Real Madrid, sitting in 2nd with a point less having played a game more. Last night’s failure to capitalise on a Real Madrid loss at Valencia meant the Catalan club could fall to 4 points adrift if Real win their match in hand.
Barcelona’s statement thanked Zubizarreta for his work: “The President, in the name of the club, thanks Andoni Zubizarreta for his contribution, dedication and professionalism over the last four years in his role at the head of the club’s football area.”
The position is certainly a big opportunity for someone, who do you think Barcelona will aim for?
