Liverpool fans have been desperate for their club to sign talented Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri for a number of months. However according to TalkSport, the Reds have missed out on Shaqiri as he opts of Inter Milan instead.
Xherdan Shaqiri is just 23-years-old and began his career with FC Basel. He graduated their youth academy to play for their Under-21 side before making the leap up to the first team back in July 2009. After 92 appearances and 18 goals he attracted the interest of German giants Bayern Munich who paid €11.6m for his services in February 2012.
Shaqiri’s wing talents were important in his first Bundesliga season as he featured in 26 ties, scoring 4 times and winning the league title. However under Pep Guardiola last season he featured much less, just 17 showings in Bundesliga and even less this campaign with 9 appearances, mostly coming from the bench.
With Bayern Munich willing to let Shaqiri depart Germany it began a race for his signature. The 41 capped Switzerland international has reportedly had a bid accepted for him by Roberto Mancini’s Inter Milan who will take him initially on loan before buying him for £12m in the summer. This will hurt Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool who were hoping Shaqiri could ignite a poor Premier League campaign with goals and creativity out wide.
Liverpool fans, is it acceptable that you missed out on long-term target Shaqiri? Who should you target next?
