Manchester United fans will be delighted to here that their club are set to bid £35m to secure Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels. According to the Daily Mirror, they will look to exploit the Bundesliga club’s woeful campaign so far.

Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has spoken about the need for his club to strengthen, particularly in defence where they have been hit by injury crisis and suspension so far this season. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also needs a defender and that has led to a long chance by both clubs for German international Mats Hummels. With the Bundesliga side struggling in the table it is thought Hummels is willing to consider a Premier League switch.

Mats Hummels began his career with German giants Bayern Munich and graduated their academy to the B side where he played 42 league matches. However after just 1 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich, Hummels moved to rivals Borussia Dortmund initially on loan and then permanently for €4m in February 2009. Since then he has appeared in 181 Bundesliga games, winning 2 league titles and finishing as a UEFA Champions League runner-up.

At still only 26-years-old Hummels is a World Cup winner with Germany in Brazil last summer and now aims to progress his career with Manchester United should they convince Dortmund to sell. Hummels price tag reads £35m which will make him one of the most expensive defenders ever but the fee is unlikely to deter Louis Van Gaal who needs to rebuild his Old Trafford team.
