Fernando Torres, known as El Nino, has return to Atletico Madrid and last night his side took on the giants of Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey. With a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, Atleti drew the tie 2-2 to send Los Blancos out, Torres netting both goals.
Fernando Torres began his career with the Atleti youth academy in 1995 and graduated to the first team in 2001. The forward was prolific in the Spanish capital, netting 82 times in 214 appearances and becoming a club icon at a young age. In the summer of 2007 he signed for Liverpool for £20m under Rafa Benitez, taking Anfield by storm with a mighty 65 Premier League goals in 102 games, 81 in 142 in all competitions.
In Janaury 2011 the Spaniard was bought by Chelsea for a club record £50m, becoming one of the biggest transfers in the history of the Premier League. However Torres suffered a torrid time at Stamford Bridge, often being the source of mockery by other supporters. He only netted 20 goals in 110 Premier League fixtures, a better record of 45 in 172 in all competitions.
To rid Torres off their wage bill, Jose Mourinho sanctioned a loan to AC Milan in the summer but he scored just once in 10 Serie A matches. Torres was purchased by Milan though who then loaned him to Atletico Madrid in exchange for Alessio Cerci. Torres was home and now can get his career back on track.
Atleti manager Diego Simeone has now credited the 110 capped Spanish international for his Copa del Rey goals saying: “He left, matured and is now a man. I am very pleased for him. The fans are happy and his arrival has been good for us even though some had their doubts.” (BBC Sport)
