Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard nearly joined Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea back in the day, only to see the Merseyside man commit to staying at his boyhood club. A transfer that Mourinho has said is his only regret.
However, the Chelsea manager has revealed he would like to sign Gerrard on loan now that the former England captain will be joining MLS side, L.A. Galaxy. Yet, it would appear that the Special One’s comments were merely tongue and cheek.
Mourinho told BBC Sport that he is “sorry” that the former England captain is leaving the Premier League.
When asked if he would try to persuade Gerrard to stay, Mourinho said: “Or to get him on loan.”
Mourinho said: “I’m not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players.
“I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite [of the fact] he’s my opponent, I feel sorry that he’s leaving.”
Steven Gerrard was poised to join the Blues in 2005 will be resurrecting the move in 2015? I doubt it.
