Aston Villa fans were given a huge boost before their F.A. Cup victory over Championship side, Bournemouth yesterday. Villa teased fans as the posted a picture on their stadium screen of a “new signing”. Just before kick off, it was revealed that that man was Fabian Delph who has penned a new four-and-a-half-year contract with the club.
The 25-year-old England international was out of contract in the summer but will now stay at the Premier League side until at least 2019.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Delph said, “I am a loyal person and committing my future will hopefully show everybody what type of guy I am,” he said.
“There was no way I was going to bail out. I am here for the long run,” added Delph.
“The fans have been the same [with me]. I am sure they will stick with us, help us get through this season and then looking into the future, it looks promising to me.”
Delph has been linked with a summer move to Premier League side Liverpool, but now the midfielder has put to bed any speculation linking him to another club and Villa boss, Paul Lambert is delighted.
“I’m pretty sure not a lot of people saw that coming,” he said.
“We are delighted and it is great credit to a lot of people at this club who have put a lot of work into it. It also says a lot for Fabian and his loyalty that he’s staying.
“It’s great for him because it puts everything to bed. I know from my own experience that when you come out of contract your head can be all over the place. He will be settled and will be a big driving force behind this club for the next few years. It’s a great coup for this club.”
A huge boost for Villa fans who can now relax over the future of Delph but are still sweating on the future of their club.
